Sector News Update – 29 June 2020

Hi all!

Last week we told you about the government’s announcement to extend free school meals over the summer holidays. The Department for Education has now released details on this summer food fund. https://schoolsweek.co.uk/dfe-finally-reveals-details-of-covid-summer-food-fund/

The Health Secretary announced that coronavirus testing has been made even easier and more accessible. Six new ‘walk through’ local testing sites are now offering appointments to people in England, with the capacity to test hundreds of people each day and are all easily accessible by foot or on a bike. There are now 68 test sites across the country, alongside the 6 new walk-through sites in England, new mobile testing units, and special home test post-boxes. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/health-secretary-calls-on-country-to-get-tested-as-access-is-expanded-even-further

Schools will not have to set the new reception baseline assessment this autumn, after the government delayed its statutory introduction as a result of the coronavirus. Nick Gibb, the schools minister, said the decision had been made because “some schools may not have had the time they need to familiarise their teachers and staff with the process”. https://schoolsweek.co.uk/reception-baseline-assessment-introduction-delayed-to-2021/

Newly-released Office for National Statistics (ONS) data on deaths registered weekly in England and Wales suggests that people are still avoiding visiting hospitals over fear of catching Covid-19. http://www.nationalhealthexecutive.com/Robot-News/health-foundation-people-still-avoiding-hospital-visits

The government announced last week that two billion items of personal protective equipment (PPE) have now been delivered to the frontline since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. Amid unprecedented global pressures on supply chains, 341 million masks, 313 million aprons, 4 million gowns and 1.1 billion gloves have been delivered to frontline workers thanks to the efforts of government, NHS, industry and the armed forces to massively scale-up distribution networks. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-milestone-hit-as-2-billion-items-of-ppe-delivered
