Hello and welcome back. This week we’ve got news of government funding for local councils (and discussion about how longer term cuts are causing devastation), problems with migration policies and ideas for how to deal with elderly inmates of a Scottish prison through a secure social care setting.
General social care news
The Guardian’s Social Policy Editor, Patrick Butler, reports on how a decade of cuts has reduced local authorities’ ability to deal with key long-term issues – from child protection to an ageing society.

The Government has ordered an NHS Trust review following the Nottingham killings to help provide victims’ families with answers. This special review into Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, where Valdo Calocane was treated for paranoid schizophrenia, will provide answers for the families and focus on wider issues in mental healthcare provision in the region.
